Abstract

The growing dangers associated with rising temperatures necessitate a collaborative approach to evaluate and improve the thermal resilience of buildings and communities, ensuring the safety of occupants while reducing property and infrastructure damage. However, the effectiveness of strategies to mitigate and adapt to extreme temperatures is hindered by insufficient coordination among stakeholders and a lack of standardized resilience assessment procedures throughout the building life cycle. This review analyzes existing literature on resilience parameters related to thermal stress and risk in extreme indoor environments. Key stakeholders in thermal resilience include architects, engineers, occupants, property owners, real estate developers, urban planners, and policymakers. The review also highlights the motivations for measuring thermal resilience, such as protecting occupant health and safety, safeguarding property, and maintaining business continuity during extreme weather events. It offers actionable insights and identifies future research needs to enhance resilience through customized parameters for stakeholders involved in the planning, design, construction, operation, and retrofitting of buildings and communities.
